Starting with the soil

June 11, 2020: The scattered wildflowers and natives shown in the yard in the peak of Spring gave the space some appearance of fertility. However, underneath these is basically sand and tons of gravel that made growing most things year-round very difficult. We had to start with the soil, removing and repurposing tons of gravel, using a giant homemade sifter to strain out crabgrass rhizomes, and turning organic compost into the soil that is essentially sand. We live about one block from the beach, and when you dig down, you can see that we actually live on the beach.
