Three Things That Make a Great Kids' Gardening Book

What makes a great kids’ garden book? We’ve been thinking about this question a lot lately and have boiled it down to three things. The best garden books are ones that simultaneously achieve the following:

  1. Tell a good story- (in pictures and/or words

  2. Teach specific garden skills or knowledge

And, of course,

3. have great illustrations

Here are a few children’s gardening books that we feel achieve these three elements together.  If you have any favorites that we should add to this beginning list, please send them our way!

Growing Vegetable Soup by Lois Ehlert Ages 2 - 5 Also en Español

How Does My Garden Grow? by Gerda Muller Age 4 and up

Up in the Garden, Down in the Dirt by Kate Messner Age 4 and up

Grow: A Family Guide to Plants and How to Grow Them by Riz Reyes Ages 7 and up

Flower spotlight: Have You Ever Seen a Flower by Shawn Harris Ages 4 and up. This one doesn’t quite tick the “garden skills” box, but it’s so fun and beautiful, we had to include it.
